Recursion

“Overflowing with provocative ideas, Ballantyne’s debut displays enviable mastery of both suspenseful storytelling and technological extrapolation.  Mark him as a writer of considerable promise”

“An exceptional first novel.  A new British writer has arrived to join the likes of Hamilton, Reynolds and Banks”

I can’t even agree without causing a stake overflow.. 😀 It was an Amazing Story.

      1. Did you enjoy much of the ‘Dart’ language in the end? As I said on Twitter, I know it’s a bit of a dead language (or atleast not picked up very much steam yet), but I just found the syntax to be quite refreshing and annoying at the same time.

I think I prefer a much stricter language that can compile rather than the semi wishy washy of scripted languages, but I do see they both have their places.

        1. I started it but got distracted. I’m with you that I prefer a stricter language. Python irritates me at times because whenever I’m doing something there’s always a nagging feeling at the back of my mind that there is already a function that will do it for me. And don’t get me started on PHP…

  2. I am still trying to find a ‘new’ paperback of this book. I like my Kindle Edition, but I would prefer a physical copy.. I know we have talked about that they never produced a hard back but just sad I can’t find paper back now :(.

    1. I wish I had some more copies, too. I gave away nearly all of my author copies. I only have one of each version on my shelf. (sigh)

  3. I still remember finding Recursion by accident in a Wal Mart’s tiny scifi section. Half asleep and just looking for something to take to my boring security job the next day, I picked it up while reaching for something by Stephen Baxter and failed to notice my error until the next morning.
I’m going to count that as one of the top ten best mistakes of my life. It was a couple of years before I was able to get my hands on Capacity, and after that I made it a point to get a copy of Divergence as quickly as possible. I’ve made it a point to recommend them to every person I know who enjoys reading science fiction.

    1. Something similar happened to me when I was a kid. I was at church fair or school fair or something, bored, looking through the second hand books. There was nothing but romances, dashing men and women in old fashioned dresses, and there in the middle there was one book with an SF cover on the front. I bought it even though I’d never heard of the author – Larry Niven. Couldn’t put it down!

      1. Oh, that’s wonderful!
Speaking of covers, I’m curious: do you prefer the NA or European covers for the Recursion series? Being in the US, I saw the NA covers first, with a venumb framing one of the central characters. Capacity, with a Judy looking out a port at Earth, did a fine job of drawing in my eye (and my heart) when I finally received a copy.

        1. I couldn’t choose between the two sets of covers, they were both very different and excellent in their own way. My favourite ones were both the Capacities, neither of those covers were at all what I was expecting, I thought them both very striking.
